Impact of Election Results on Medicaid Expansion

These presidential elections will ultimately be the key as to whether  the remaining states that have not yet expanded Medicaid eligibility will or will not. Most of the candidates for those remaining states seem to be aware of the fact that Medicaid expansion will indeed help the overall health status of the state, but at the end it will depend on our future President’s orders.

“If Clinton wins, that will put a lot of questions about the future of the ACA to rest, and many states will re-look at the issue of expansion,” said Joan Alker, a Medicaid policy expert at Georgetown University. A Clinton victory, she added, would embolden more pragmatic GOP leaders who have been interested in expansion all along, such as Senate leaders in Florida and the governors of Georgia and South Dakota.
