What Does it Mean that Half of California Kids Are on Medicaid?

California has improved its healthcare insurance coverage, especially when it comes to children – since 5.18 million residents are under 19 years old. Joan Alker mentioned that even though this is true, they still have a lot of work to do – as do many other states.

California does “a reasonably good job covering children … and they’ve extended coverage to undocumented children which only a handful of states have done,” said Joan Alker, executive director of the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University and an expert on Medicaid and children.

Tricia Brooks, senior fellow at the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University, said states with highest costs of living tend to have higher eligibility thresholds. “I’d argue that given the high cost of living in California, their eligibility level is not sufficient,” Brooks said. “It should be higher.”
