After GOP Health Bill’s Demise, More States Weigh Expanding Medicaid

Now that House Speaker Paul Ryan confirmed that Obamacare will remain for the time being, it seems like a large number of states that had not yet expanded Medicaid will probably do so. This is so because they now know that the American Health Care Act will be much harder to go through, and they have the available resources to do so.

“The thing that held states back was that they were going to end Medicaid expansion,” said Adam Searing, a research professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families. “Now when you have the House speaker saying this is going to stay, it’s like, ‘We may get the money, why not explore it?’ ”

“It makes it much harder for Republicans,” said Georgetown’s Mr. Searing. “States are expanding under Republican leadership.”
