Consumer Protections

The Affordable Care Act includes a number of important consumer protection measures such as requiring insurers to spend more of every health care dollar on actual care rather than administrative or marketing costs.  Insurers also are prohibited from arbitrarily cancelling coverage due to an illness or denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.  They no longer can leave families with overwhelming health care costs by imposing lifetime limits or annual caps on health care benefits.  And, they must provide young adults with more affordable health care coverage options by allowing them to maintain coverage through their parents’ health plans until age 26.  Finally, it encourages consumers to be proactive in seeking preventive care by eliminating co-pays.
