Louisiana Governor Edwards signs the executive order expanding Medicaid in Louisiana (Video)

On January 12, 2016 newly-elected Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards signed the executive order expanding Medicaid in Louisiana. This shouldn’t be a surprise – Medicaid expansion was a major issue in the campaign, with all candidates regardless of party pledging some sort of Medicaid expansion plans. However, Edwards was unequivocal during the campaign that he would expand “on day one” if elected.  With this executive order signed he has set a goal of a July 1, 2016 start date – ambitious but achievable. Louisiana’s move will be watched closely as it is the second southern state after Arkansas to expand coverage and the first in the Deep South to do so. One interesting question is how much effect this expansion will have on neighboring Alabama where there has been some talk – but not much recent action – of moves toward considering expansion by Governor Bentley. Here’s an excerpt of Governor Edwards signing his executive order for expansion – and displaying an in-depth knowledge of the policy debate behind the move.
