Children’s Health Coverage: States Moving Forward

March 2008, July 2007 and May 2007

May 2007: This report provides results from a nationwide review of state efforts to provide health care coverage to uninsured children between January 2006 and mid-April 2007. It shows that a large number of states throughout the country have proposed, passed, or implemented initiatives to cover more children through three primary strategies: finding, enrolling, and keeping SCHIP- and Medicaid-eligible children covered; increasing SCHIP and Medicaid eligibility; and integrating private and public insurance financing.

July 2007 Update: This update to the May 2007 report provides a review of state proposals as of July 20, 2007. It shows that between January 2006 and mid-July 2007, more than half of all states took action to expand coverage for children.

March 2008 Web Update: This web update provides a review of state implementation efforts on children's coverage in 2006 and 2007. It also provides information on the status of these efforts in light of new federal restrictions to limit the ability of states to expand coverage to children above 250 percent of the federal poverty level.
