NC Makes Progress on Uninsured Children

In a study by Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families, North Carolina reported that North Carolina is ranked second in the nation for its reduction of uninsured children.

In the last five years, the number of uninsured children declined by 1.7 millions due to Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program, which Congress will be determine if funding should continue.

Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown Center for Children and Families and a co-author of the Georgetown University report, says a great deal is riding on the outcome of that debate.

“Right now, we have just over five million children who are uninsured in the United States,” she says. “If Congress doesn’t fund that program, that number could swell to over seven million. So, that’s a critical decision.”
