Senators Introduce Resolution to Nullify August 17th Directive
Senators Rockefeller (D-WV) and Baucus (D-MT) took the first formal step yesterday to halt the implementation of the August 17th CMS directive. The directive would impose new barriers on states, preventing them from expanding coverage to more children and families.

Congress Considers Action on August 17th Directive
As the economy weakens and more families find themselves unable to afford health insurance, Congress considers revoking a CMS directive limiting states' ability to expand coverage to more children and families. A recent CCF report shows that numerous states and thousands of uninsured children could be affected by the August 17th directive.

Premium Assistance Paper Released by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured
A new issue brief by CCF researcher Joan Alker examines six state premium assistance programs (in Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia) that allow families to choose to receive a subsidy to apply to the purchase of private coverage rather than to receive direct Medicaid or SCHIP coverage.
