Clock Ticking on Federal Funding for CHIP, Other Health Safety Net Programs

Federal funding for several health care safety-net programs is set to expire at the end of the week unless Congress takes action — a prospect that is looking increasingly less likely, advocates say, as the clock ticks and congressional energy is consumed by an 11th-hour attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“Congress should have taken action on CHIP months ago,” said Joan Alker, executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, speaking Friday on a conference call with reporters.
