Medicaid’s Special Importance for Children in Southern and Western States

We can’t say it enough here at Georgetown CCF – Medicaid is critical for delivering quality health care to children and their families. Our state, county and congressional district maps make clear just how important Medicaid is to children across the country, regardless of which elected officials represent them in Washington, D.C. Nationally, children make up about half of total enrollment in the Medicaid program. Many people may not realize that Medicaid is the largest insurer for children and it plays an especially large role in insuring children from the South through the Midwest. There are 16 states that have a much higher than average percentage of children relying on Medicaid/CHIP coverage to meet their health care needs.  Children in these states would be even more at risk if Congress approves the more than $800 billion in Medicaid cuts through “per capita caps” currently under consideration.
