Utah: Medicaid Expansion Report Presented to Legislative Health Reform Task Force

Presented to the Health Reform Task Force of the Utah legislature today the report, by Dr. Norman J. Waitzman of the University of Utah Department of Economics, gives extensive information about the people who would benefit should Utah decide to accept federal money to extend health coverage to low-income people in the state.  Surprisingly, the Waitzman report found that over 77,000 Utahns are in poverty, fall into the current coverage gap and would gain coverage under a Medicaid expansion – a higher number than previously reported.  In addition, the report detailed demographic characteristics of individuals and families currently living without insurance who would be eligible for a new Medicaid plan. Working adults make up the majority of the group (65 percent) and, while many are single about 37 percent are already married and many families have children as well.  The full report is below:
