Pandemic Creates Pitfalls, Opportunity for Maternal Medicaid Coverage

Efforts to curb the country’s maternal mortality crisis through policy change have, like most issues, taken a back seat to the coronavirus pandemic. … … In an ironic twist, though, the pandemic’s economic crisis has also likely kept some new mothers on Medicaid longer than they normally would have been eligible. The Families First Coronavirus Response Act, enacted in March, requires that states not remove people from Medicaid during the national emergency declaration in order to receive increased federal funding for the program. The requirement doesn’t apply to the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which covers pregnant women in six states.
