Imagine taking a sick child to the doctor or the emergency room only to find that your insurance has lapsed. That is happening to thousands of families whose children are covered by Medicaid as they are required to submit more paperwork, verify their income more frequently and comply with unreasonable deadlines they don’t even know about because form letters never arrived in the mail. That sort of red tape contributed to an increase in the number of uninsured children, rising by more than 400,000 and exceeding 4 million nationwide between 2016 and 2018.
