Pharmacists Can Give Routine Vaccinations to Children, HHS Says

A Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) decision allowing pharmacists to administer routine vaccinations to children during the COVID-19 pandemic is drawing mixed reviews from healthcare organizations.

Tricia Brooks, MBA, research professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families in Washington, D.C., agreed with the AAP and AAFP. “This rule creates more chaos and confusion at a time when parents need calm reassurance,” she said in an email. “Children and families would be better served by focusing on how to keep children safely and securely connected with their pediatricians during the pandemic rather than making hasty decisions that may have unforeseen consequences on children’s health and well-being,” Brooks said.
