Judy Shaw remembers that when she walked into Children’s of Alabama, in Birmingham, in 2014, she was greeted by some executives “with their arms crossed.” Shaw, the director of the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program (VCHIP), run through the University of Vermont in Burlington, had been invited to Alabama by the children’s hospital to provide guidance on implementing an improvement program for the state… “Generally speaking, small states with a lack of diversity aren’t seen as leaders to any other state,” says Tricia Brooks, a research professor at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, in Washington, D.C. “That said, VCHIP is a good model that other states would want to imitate.”
