One in seven children in Harris County were uninsured in 2019, one of the highest rates in the country and almost triple the national average, according to a report from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families. Those numbers are only expected to rise in 2020, as families lose employer-sponsored health insurance plans amid coronavirus recession-driven layoffs nationwide, analysts said. “Having health insurance is critical for everybody, but especially for children,” said Joan Alker, one of the report’s co-authors. “As every parent knows, you go to the doctor a lot when you have kids.”
