Speaker Bios for December 7, 2022 Press Call

  • Joan Alker is the co-founder and executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families and a Research Professor at the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy. She is a nationally recognized expert on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and is the lead author of CCF’s annual report on children’s health care coverage trends. Joan has published in journals such as JAMA and Health Affairs and has written numerous reports, blogs, and other commentary on a wide range of issues including Medicaid Section 1115 waivers, child and family health, the role of Medicaid in rural areas, and on premium assistance for the Kaiser Family Foundation. Alker has testified before Congress, served on expert advisory panels to the federal government, and is a frequent speaker and commentator. Joan holds a Master of Philosophy in politics from St. Antony’s College, Oxford University, and a Bachelor of Arts with honors in political science from Bryn Mawr College.

 

  • Anne Dunkelberg focuses on policy and budget issues related to health care access and immigrants’ access to public benefits. She joined Every Texan in 1994 from the State Medicaid Director’s Office at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Anne is a founding member of the statewide Children’s Health Coverage Coalition (formerly the Texas CHIP Coalition) and the Cover Texas Now Coalition. She was the primary author of the first edition of Texas Medicaid in Perspective (“the Pink Book”) and serves on the Texas Medicaid Managed Care Statewide advisory committee and the Texas Healthcare Transformation Waiver Executive Waiver Committee. Anne is a native Texan, and received her B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and her Master of Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

 

  • Dr. Deborah Greenhouse is a pediatrician in practice at Palmetto Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic in Columbia, South Carolina. She is a native of Rockaway, New Jersey. She received her undergraduate degree in microbiology from Clemson University and her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where she continues to serve as a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, teaching pediatric and family medicine residents as well as medical students. She is a past president of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is also the South Carolina coordinator for the PROS (Pediatric Research in Office Settings) Network. She continues to be very active in children’s health advocacy efforts on a state level and within the American Academy of Pediatrics, currently serving on the AAP Committee for Federal Government Affairs.
