Rhode Island Shines in New Uninsured Children Report

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island is a shining star in a new report examining the number of children without health-insurance coverage.

The report from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families found that the number of uninsured children in Rhode Island dropped 38 percent from 2013 to 2014, ranking the state third nationally.

Rhode Island’s rate of uninsured children already was lower than the national average in 2013, which Joan Alker, executive director of the Center for Children and Families, said makes the state’s accomplishments especially notable. She added that embracing the Affordable Care Act is providing results.

“Obviously, the Affordable Care Act has been very controversial in some places,” she said, “but where we see state leaders of both parties really rolling up their sleeves and doing the work, we’re seeing real benefits for children in their state and that’s terrific.”
