There is still a dental insurance crisis, even though the Affordable Care Act has expanded the dental coverage. Research suggest to fix this all states must have dentists taking care of children’s dental health – regardless of their dental health coverage.

To manage that crisis, researchers at Georgetown and the Children’s Dental Health Project, which issued the report Wednesday, are recommending that states require dentists treating all children, regardless of insurance status, to perform risk assessments. These assessments include interviews and exams that determine a child’s risk of dental disease and need for treatment.
States should focus on ways to improve childhood oral health, which will then improve school performance, job prospects and economic mobility for families, the Georgetown report’s authors said. The report is the second in a series by Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families on the future of children’s health coverage.
