Thousands of Alabama Parents Could Lose Care Under Work Rules

CQ

An estimated 8,700 low-income parents and caregivers in Alabama could be kicked off Medicaid in the first year alone if the state’s plan to create a work mandate becomes reality, a new study finds. The proposed work requirement would disproportionately impact women, African Americans and families in rural areas, according to a Georgetown University report released Tuesday.

However, Alabama’s strict income eligibility standards mean there are relatively few adults on the program, and they are some of the state’s poorest residents. “Alabama’s proposal creates more red tape and barriers to Medicaid coverage that will do nothing to help families rise out of poverty,” said Joan Alker, head of Georgetown’s Center for Children and Families. “It’s hard enough to raise a family on such a limited income without someone putting more roadblocks in the way.”
