AUSTIN — More children in Texas are getting health insurance, but there still are far more uninsured kids here than in any other state in the country, according to a report released last Wednesday.

Overall, the report by the Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families found there were nearly 4.4 million children without health insurance in the United States last year (6 percent), down from 5.2 million in 2013 (7.1 percent), a drop the report attributed to President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

Joan Alker, a spokeswoman for the center, said in a statement that if Texas expanded Medicaid, significantly more people would be covered.
