Webinar and Report Release: Medicaid Key to Maternal and Infant Health in Rural America

Georgetown University CCF shared a new report with state-by-state data on Medicaid coverage of women of reproductive age and how cuts could impact their access to obstetric care in small towns and rural areas.

Medicaid plays a larger role in providing health coverage to people living in small towns and rural communities than it does in metropolitan areas, a trend that is particularly striking among women of childbearing age, according to an extensive analysis by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families (CCF). Congress is considering large cuts to federal Medicaid funding through a fast-track budget process, which are expected to cause even greater harm to rural communities than metro areas.

Speakers:

  • Joan Alker, Georgetown University CCF Executive Director and lead author of the report
  • Ryan Cross, Vice President of Government Affairs and Advocacy at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS), a non-profit Catholic health system serving patients in Louisiana and Mississippi
  • Katy Backes Kozhimannil, Co-Director of the Rural Health Research Center and a Professor in the Division of Health Policy and Management, University of Minnesota School of Public Health
