Running CMS: What it’s Like, and What Seema Verma May Do

POLITICO Pulse Check

During POLITICO’s podcast, Seema Verma’s role as the CMS health policy consultant is discussed. Then, Tom Scully and Joan Alker are interviewed, and present their opinions on the said topic.

WHAT IT’S LIKE TO RUN CMS, AND WHAT VERMA MAY DO

– On POLITICO’s “Pulse Check” podcast, former CMS administrator Tom Scully walks through what it’s like to run the agency, and Joan Alker, executive director of Georgetown’s Center for Children and Families, discusses Verma’s approach to Medicaid reform.

– What Verma needs to do to be successful. “Have a great relationship with Secretary Price,” Scully urges, adding that being close with the boss can allow for political cover. And “just make sure you get some sleep.”

– What Verma could mean for health reform. “Her vision of coverage has many barriers,” said Alker, warning that Verma’s interest in tightening Medicaid eligibility and instituting work requirements could hurt poor Americans.

This podcast was featured in POLITICO Pulse this morning. Joan’s interview begins at 29:25.
